From Lobby Rendering to an Installable Sintered Stone Feature Wall

The brief arrived as a visual target, not a finished wall specification. We still had to connect the stone pattern to the finished elevation, logo position, lighting, visible joints, panel handling, quotation scope and overseas delivery. This is the practical work behind a lobby wall that looks calm after installation—because the difficult decisions were made before production.
What arrived in the inbox—and what was still missing
We started by separating the design intention from the information required to price and build the wall. A rendering can tell us whether the lobby should feel bright, dramatic or quiet. It cannot tell us where a panel may safely end, whether a joint crosses the logo, or whether the largest proposed piece can pass through the lift and reach the installation area.

A beautiful rendering was the easy part
From the guest's position, the lobby wall reads as one composition. From the contractor's position, it is a set of heavy panels meeting a floor, ceiling, reception desk, side returns, light channels, signs, sockets and access panels. The visual concept only survives if these two views are reconciled.
We marked every item that could force a late cut or an ugly joint. A logo centred on the wall can sit off-centre within a slab. A vertical light slot can be mistaken for a convenient seam even when the vein breaks badly at that point. A reception counter may hide the lower part of a joint from the front while leaving it obvious from the entrance.
Before we treated the enquiry as quote-ready, we asked for:
- A dimensioned finished elevation, not only a room plan, showing the exact cladding limits and all wall returns.
- Logo, screen, outlet, door and access-panel locations, including the sizes of openings and the clearance the installer needs around them.
- Ceiling, floor and desk reference lines, so the panel grid is aligned with what guests actually see.
- Lighting information, especially linear or grazing light that can exaggerate surface reflection, uneven substrates and joint lines.
- The route from unloading point to wall, including container unloading, doorway, corridor, turning radius, lift size and on-site lifting equipment.
- A named decision owner, because pattern direction cannot remain subject to several conflicting approvals after cutting begins.
We shortlisted the material against the wall—not against a mood board
The material decision was not simply 'natural stone versus sintered stone'. We compared what the design needed with what the project team could approve, reproduce, fabricate, transport and maintain. Sintered stone provided a controlled large-format surface direction, but it did not remove the need for a physical sample, an agreed layout or a suitable wall system.
We also treated polished, matte and textured finishes as lighting decisions. The same design can look calm under diffuse light and show strong glare beneath spotlights. That is why a sample should be reviewed vertically, near the proposed colour temperature, and from both the entrance distance and close range.
- Pattern control: the selected design must have enough usable movement for the wall width and the proposed sequence.
- Format efficiency: the nominal slab size is checked against finished panel sizes, trimming allowance, openings and cutting risk.
- Batch control: approved pieces should be allocated from a consistent production batch wherever practical.
- Finish under light: gloss level and texture are assessed for glare, fingerprints, cleaning expectations and the visual effect of grazing light.
- Fabrication reality: cut-outs close to edges, narrow strips and fragile returns are reviewed before they become site problems.
- Supply reality: packing, replacement strategy and lead time are considered together with appearance—not after selection.
Four surfaces we would put on the first sample board
These are starting points, not automatic specifications. We ask the designer to review a physical sample vertically at the intended lighting level, compare it with the floor, desk and metal finishes, then approve the exact product code and finish in writing.
A screen image can help shortlist colour. It cannot confirm scale, gloss, texture or batch appearance.

A light marble direction for lobbies that need brightness without turning the wall into a flat white backdrop. We would check whether the vein scale remains visible from the entrance and whether it conflicts with the reception desk centreline.

We did not start by dividing the wall into the fewest possible rectangles. We started with what the guest sees, then tested the proposed panel sizes against fabrication, access and installation. A deliberate extra joint can be better than one oversized panel that cannot enter the building or one narrow strip that is vulnerable during handling.

What the final quotation must make unambiguous
A unit price per square metre is not enough for a feature wall. We separate the visible material from the work and risk around it. That makes it easier for the buyer to compare quotations fairly and easier for both sides to see which party owns each decision.

How we turned the enquiry into a controlled quotation
We kept one working record instead of allowing drawings, screenshots and chat messages to become separate versions of the truth. Every revision was attached to a decision: material, layout, fabrication, packing or freight.
- 01 — Clean the brief: we put the finished wall dimensions, design references, destination, target date and responsible contacts on one project sheet. Missing information was shown as an open item.
- 02 — Reduce the sample list: rather than sending many unrelated colours, we shortlisted options against the lighting, desk finish, floor and desired visual weight of the lobby.
- 03 — Mark the elevation: we overlaid proposed joints, slab direction, openings and panel IDs so the buyer could comment on a drawing rather than on a verbal promise.
- 04 — Compare practical options: when useful, we presented a visual-first layout and a logistics-first layout, showing how extra joints or smaller pieces could change handling risk and cost.
- 05 — Price by scope: material, fabrication, packing and freight were separated. If local cutting or installation was expected, that exclusion remained visible.
- 06 — Hold approval gates: product and sample first; panel map next; fabrication schedule after that; packing list and pre-shipment record last. Production should not race ahead of an unresolved drawing.
The handoff that protects the installer from surprises
Our supply information supports the installation team, but it does not replace the local architect, engineer, fixing-system provider or responsible contractor. They must approve the substrate, fixing design, movement provision, tolerances, loading and local code requirements for the actual building.
Before fabrication, we ask the site team to review what can only be known locally: whether the wall is plumb and flat, where framing or brackets sit, which edges remain visible, how panels will be lifted, and how much adjustment is available at the floor, ceiling and returns.
- Survey after the wall build-up is known. Rough masonry dimensions and finished cladding dimensions are not interchangeable.
- Check the complete access route. A panel that fits the wall may still fail at a loading bay, corridor corner, door or lift.
- Confirm cut-out responsibility. Late site changes around sockets, signage and screens are high-risk work on large pieces.
- Use stable panel IDs. Labels such as W01-P01 identify wall, position and sequence; the same IDs should appear on drawings, pieces and packing records.
- Agree the starting datum. The installer needs the approved centreline or edge datum, joint width strategy and direction of progress.
- Record delivery condition before unpacking. Photograph crate faces, seals, shock or tilt indicators if used, and any visible damage before moving material.

Packing order follows installation order
Export packing is part of the panel schedule, not a separate warehouse task. We plan how faces are separated, how polished surfaces are protected, how narrow pieces are supported, and how labels remain visible without forcing the receiver to unpack every crate to find the first installation panel.

Panel-level protection
Each finished piece is separated so hard surfaces and exposed edges do not rub in transit. Narrow returns, cut-outs and polished faces are identified for extra support instead of receiving the same protection as a full rectangular slab.

The packing format is chosen around piece size, order volume, transport mode and unloading equipment. Bracing, edge restraint and crate weight must make sense for both the voyage and the receiver's actual handling method.

Crate marks, panel IDs, packing photos and the final packing list create a receiving trail. The site team is asked to photograph the load before unloading and any visible concern before material is moved or discarded.

Is sintered stone suitable for hotel lobby feature walls?
It can be suitable when the chosen product, thickness, finish, panel sizes and fixing approach are coordinated with the actual wall system. The material supplier should not approve the building substrate or local installation design by assumption; those items remain with the responsible local project team.
Should I always use the largest possible sintered stone panel?
No. A larger panel may reduce joints, but it also increases handling weight, turning-space requirements and breakage consequences. We compare the finished elevation with slab yield, lift and doorway dimensions, site equipment and installer capability before recommending a panel schedule.
Can bookmatched sintered stone be used for a lobby wall?
Yes, but the centreline, pair sequence, face orientation and trimming allowance must be approved from the actual supplied design sequence. The installer also needs stable panel IDs. Reversing or rotating one piece can destroy the intended symmetry even when every panel dimension is correct.
Is 9 mm or 12 mm better for a lobby feature wall?
Thickness cannot be selected from the application name alone. It depends on the wall build-up, finished panel size, fixing system, edge details, reinforcement, handling method and project requirements. We provide material information; the responsible local designer or fixing-system provider confirms the final assembly.
What should I send before requesting a quotation?
Send the dimensioned finished elevation, cladding limits, all openings and fixed elements, preferred surface direction, finish, destination, required shipping term, access constraints and target programme. If some items are unknown, mark them as open; a visible unknown is safer than a guessed dimension.
