The Vision & The Hurdle
When the client first approached us, they had a very clear vision: a central kitchen island glowing with the translucent beauty of natural Onyx. But anyone who cooks knows the reality of natural Onyx—it's fragile, stains easily from wine or lemon juice, and is a nightmare to maintain in a busy kitchen.
The second hurdle? The design featured a stunning fluted wood base with a tight curve. They needed a stone that could be machined flawlessly to match that exact radius without chipping.
Where Craftsmanship Meets Technology
We knew our 12mm Cristallo Onyx sintered stone was the perfect fit. It captures the incredible crystalline depth of natural stone, but it’s engineered to be tough enough for daily, heavy-duty life.
- Spill red wine or set down a hot pan? No problem. The zero-porosity surface handles it all without leaving a mark.
- Using 1:1 CNC water-jet cutting, we achieved a flawless 50mm radius curve that hugged the fluted oak cabinetry perfectly.
- We integrated the undermount sink seamlessly to keep that clean, monolithic look completely uninterrupted.
"Working with Funtek allowed us to push the boundaries of kitchen design. The translucency of their material combined with industrial-grade strength meant I could finally give my client the 'Onyx look' without any of the maintenance nightmares."

Common Questions.
Absolutely. One of the main reasons the designers chose Funtek for the Lumina project was our material's controlled translucency. Unlike natural Onyx, which can have unpredictable "dead spots," our sintered stone offers consistent light transmission. When back-lit with LED panels, the island provides a soft, ethereal glow, making it a perfect functional art piece for high-end residential interiors.
That’s the "human" advantage of this material. In this project, the owner wanted the look of premium stone without the constant worry. Our Cristallo series has near-zero porosity, meaning red wine, lemon juice, or olive oil simply wipe away without staining. Because it’s high-density, it’s also highly heat-resistant—you can move a hot pan from the stove directly onto the island surface without a trivet.
Precision is in our DNA. We used 1:1 CNC water-jet cutting technology to match the architectural radius of the custom fluted cabinetry. Sintered stone is notoriously difficult to curve without chipping, but our specific "high-tension" manufacturing process allows the slabs to be machined with surgical precision, resulting in the flawless 50mm radius corners seen in the gallery.
Unlike natural marble or granite, Funtek sintered stone never needs to be sealed or re-sealed. It is composed of 100% natural minerals pressed under extreme pressure. It is NSF-certified, meaning it is bacteriostatic and completely safe for direct food contact. It won’t harbor bacteria or mold, which is vital for an open-plan kitchen island where food is often prepared and served.
For the Lumina project, we utilized our 1600x3200mm large-format slabs to ensure the main workspace was entirely seamless. Any necessary joins (such as around the integrated sink) were color-matched using specialized epoxy resins to make them virtually invisible to the naked eye. This creates the "monolithic" (single block of stone) look that defines ultra-luxury kitchen design.
