“Polished” can describe three very different jobs: choosing a glossy slab at the factory, finishing a newly cut edge, or trying to restore the face of an installed countertop, worktop or benchtop. The first two can be legitimate product-specific processes. The third requires the exact manufacturer’s repair instructions.
Can sintered stone be polished?
Yes, sintered stone is available in factory-polished finishes, and some fabricated edges can be polished with approved tools. However, the installed decorative face should not be treated as routinely repolishable like granite or marble. Some manufacturers document limited repairs for particular polished products, but an unapproved abrasive process can create a dull patch, glossy halo, texture mismatch or decoration change. Check the current manual for the exact brand, colour and finish before any machine touches it.
Factory-polished is not the same as field-polished
A polished sintered stone surface is normally created as part of a controlled manufacturing route. Depending on the product, the sheen may rely on the slab body, a glaze or crystalline layer, digital decoration, firing cycle and factory finishing process. “Polished” does not mean every product is constructed identically, and it is not simply a matte slab that an installer has buffed until shiny.
This distinction matters because local abrasion removes or modifies the topmost part of the finish. Even when the abrasive does not expose a different colour, it can change how light scatters across the surface. Under a pendant light or daylight from a window, a repaired patch may remain visible from several metres away.

Can a fabricator polish the edge?
Many sintered stone fabrication guides provide a product-specific sequence for working exposed edges. The fabricator may use water-fed diamond tools, several grit stages and a finishing method chosen for the slab’s catalogue finish. This is controlled edge fabrication—not permission to polish the broad decorative face.
The final appearance also depends on whether the colour or pattern runs through the slab body. A surface-printed marble pattern will not automatically continue across a cut edge. A polished edge can therefore be smooth and technically correct while still looking different from the top. Before approving the profile, compare a finished edge sample and review whether the product is full-body or surface printed.
A guide that lists polishing pads for fabricated edges does not automatically authorize polishing the installed top surface.
Why repolishing the face is risky
The sheen can become uneven
Gloss is measured by reflected light, not by whether a surface feels smooth to a fingertip. A small difference in abrasive grit, pressure, speed, water flow or dwell time can leave a patch that only becomes obvious after the countertop is cleaned and dry.
The decorative layer may be altered
Some products use surface decoration, glaze, crystalline effects or registered texture. Removing even a very thin layer may change the colour density, vein detail or tactile relief. This is one reason repairability should be considered alongside the broader disadvantages and fabrication limits of sintered stone.
Abrasive work creates silica-containing dust
Cutting, grinding and polishing mineral slabs are professional fabrication operations. Product safety documents warn that machining can generate respirable crystalline silica. Work should use the specified wet methods, extraction, respiratory protection and local occupational-safety controls. A homeowner should not dry-polish a countertop indoors.
A repair may affect the warranty
Manufacturers can exclude damage caused by unapproved chemicals, abrasives or fabrication methods. Photograph the defect, record the exact product and finish, and ask the supplier for written instructions before attempting a repair.
Some polished products have a limited repair procedure
A product-specific exception does exist. A Neolith Polished technical manual describes a controlled cerium-oxide method for certain fine surface scratches and says scratches that catch a fingernail require a different, much larger intervention. That does not make cerium oxide a universal sintered-stone remedy: the instruction applies to the named polished product system, and its current validity should be confirmed with Neolith or the supplier before use.
A dull patch may not need polishing
Many “lost shine” complaints are actually surface deposits. Cleaner residue, grease film, hard-water minerals and metal transfer can reflect light differently even though the original finish is still intact. The correct response is diagnosis and compatible cleaning—not immediate abrasion.
For stain and residue diagnosis, use the sintered stone stain and surface-mark guide. If a scratch catches a fingernail or a chip exposes the edge, send close-up and side-light photographs to the supplier or fabricator.
What official technical guidance says
Current Cosentino guidance illustrates the crucial distinction. Its Dekton technical and use-and-care manuals say not to polish the surface, while a separate fabrication guide provides pad sequences for edge polishing. These instructions are not contradictory: one protects the finished face, and the other controls fabrication of cut edges.
Neolith documentation demonstrates the opposite side of the product-specific rule: one Polished manual includes a limited scratch-repair method. Lapitec also publishes dedicated surface-restoration resources. The practical lesson is not “always polish” or “never repair”; it is to use only the current procedure written for the exact manufacturer, product and finish.

What to do before approving a polished sintered stone slab
- State the catalogue finish. “Polished” should appear on the quotation, sample label and final order—not only in an email description.
- Inspect a real sample under project lighting. Look from the side for waviness, reflection changes, fingerprints and cleaning streaks.
- Approve a finished edge sample. Confirm body colour, vein continuity, sheen and the proposed profile.
- Ask for the care and fabrication manuals. Record which edge tools, cleaners and repair steps are approved.
- Keep an offcut. It gives the fabricator or repair specialist a safer place to test any future treatment.
- Qualify the fabricator. Sintered stone requires suitable support, cutting parameters, wet tooling and silica-dust controls. Review the full sintered stone countertop specification before fabrication.

Sintered stone can be supplied with a polished factory finish, and exposed cut edges can often be finished by a qualified fabricator. The installed slab face is not universally repolishable, although a named polished product may have a limited manufacturer-approved repair. If the surface looks dull, first rule out residue or mineral deposits. If the finish itself has changed, pause and obtain product-specific instructions before any abrasive work.
