The phrase “resin-free sintered stone” sounds simple until a buyer asks what, exactly, was verified. Does the claim refer to the fired slab body, the raw recipe, a surface treatment, a fiberglass-mesh adhesive, or the complete product as shipped?

That distinction matters. A mineral slab can contain no resin binder in its body while a separately applied backing or adhesive introduces an organic polymer into the supplied article. A safety data sheet can identify hazardous ingredients without disclosing a complete commercial formulation. A percentage can describe the unfired batch while the buyer assumes it describes the finished slab.

Does Sintered Stone Contain Resin?

Genuine high-fired sintered stone is normally manufactured without a polymer-resin binder. Its mineral particles are compacted and fused through heat rather than held together by polyester, epoxy or acrylic resin.

For the Funtek product family addressed here, the manufacturer declares that the finished slab contains 0% resin binder and 0% other organic material by weight, and that no organic material is used in the declared production process.

What Should “Resin-Free” Mean?

A useful resin-free declaration identifies the product, the location of the claim and the measurement basis. “Resin-free” should not be left as an undefined marketing phrase.

At minimum, ask whether it means:

  1. no resin binder dispersed throughout the slab body;
  2. no polyester, epoxy, acrylic, polyurethane or other organic polymer in the body;
  3. no organic surface coating or decorative layer;
  4. no fiberglass mesh or backing attached with an organic adhesive;
  5. no organic temporary processing aid in the production route; and
  6. no organic component in the complete product as shipped.

A supplier that can confirm only “no resin binder in the slab body” should not automatically claim that no organic material appears anywhere in production or in the supplied article.

How Is Sintered Stone Different from Resin-Bound Quartz?

The structural difference is the way the mineral particles become one slab. In sintered stone, a prepared mineral body is pressed and fired. Heat-driven densification and vitrification create the hard slab without a continuous polymer phase.

Engineered quartz is an agglomerated composite. Mineral aggregate is mixed with pigments and an organic resin system, then compacted and cured. The resin remains in the finished product as the binder connecting the mineral particles.

Separate the Slab Body from Backing, Adhesive and Surface Treatment

Composition questions go wrong when different physical layers are combined into one answer. The sintered stone manufacturing process explains how the mineral body is formed; the following boundaries explain what may sit outside that body.

Slab body

The body is the pressed and fired mineral material visible through the thickness. A statement such as “0% resin binder in the slab body” applies here.

Fiberglass mesh and backing adhesive

Glass fibers may be inorganic, while the adhesive can be epoxy, polyurethane or another organic polymer. That layer must be disclosed separately.

Surface treatment or coating

A sealer, protective film, ink, primer or post-fired coating sits at or near the surface. Its chemistry is not the body chemistry.

Temporary processing aid

An aid may be introduced before firing and later be absent from the finished slab. A production-process question must still identify whether it was used.

Packaging materials

Protective film, labels and foam are not the slab body. Report them separately when the question concerns the complete shipment.

Installation materials

Site adhesive and sealant belong to the installed assembly, not the factory slab composition, unless the slab is supplied with them already attached.

Does “No Resin Binder” Always Mean No Organic Material Was Used?

No. In general, “no resin binder in the slab body” is narrower than “no organic material anywhere in production or in the supplied product.”

A manufacturer could avoid a body binder while still using an organic temporary aid, surface coating, backing adhesive or protective layer. Buyers should therefore ask two questions:

  1. What organic material remains in the finished product?
  2. What organic material is introduced at any stage of production?

For the Funtek products declared here, the answer to both questions is none. That broader statement comes from the manufacturer declaration, not from the words “sintered stone” alone.

No single document automatically answers every composition question.

OSHA’s Section 3 guidance explains how SDS ingredient percentages and trade-secret concentrations are handled. Buyers should not treat an SDS as a complete bill of materials merely because it contains a composition section.

A strong manufacturer declaration fills the scope gaps. It should name the legal manufacturer, factory address, exact product codes, finished condition, relevant layers, percentage basis, date and authorized signatory.

Which Percentage Is Being Disclosed?

Always ask for the denominator and the process stage. “0% resin” or “70% mineral” has little value until the document states what the percentage describes.

Raw formulation

The recipe before drying, pressing and firing. Water or other inputs may not remain at the same percentage after firing.

Dry mineral batch

This basis excludes water but still describes feed material rather than the completed slab.

Fired slab body

The composition of the dense body after firing—the relevant basis for asking whether the body contains a resin binder.

Individual layer

A coating can be 100% of its own layer while representing only a small percentage of the complete article.

Complete product as shipped

This includes every permanent component supplied with the slab, such as an attached backing or coating.

Installed assembly

This can include site adhesive and sealant that were never part of the factory slab.

A clear declaration should say, for example: “polyester, epoxy, acrylic and other organic polymer binder: 0% by weight of the finished slab body,” and then separately state whether any backing, coating or processing aid exists.

How to Verify a Resin-Free Sintered Stone Claim

  1. Lock the exact product. Record the product name, code, finish, dimensions, thickness and supplied condition.
  2. Request the current SDS and TDS. Check that both identify the same manufacturer and product family.
  3. Request a signed manufacturer declaration. Ask it to address body resin, every organic polymer type, external layers, process aids and the complete shipped article.
  4. Check the percentage basis. Confirm whether each number refers to the raw recipe, dry batch, fired body, one layer or the complete product.
  5. Reconcile contradictions. Do not accept “resin-free” if another document lists polyester, epoxy, acrylate, polyurethane or an undisclosed backing adhesive.
  6. Test when the risk justifies it. Define the sample, target substances, method and reporting limit with an appropriately accredited laboratory.
  7. Tie the evidence to the shipment. Match product codes, manufacturer, exporter, invoice description and batch or production records.

WorkSafe Victoria’s data-sheet guidance similarly advises users not to rely on a “sintered stone” or “porcelain” label alone and to examine product information for resin and other chemical constituents.

Does Resin-Free Mean Silica-Free or Automatically Outside AD/CVD?

No. Resin content, crystalline silica content and U.S. trade-remedy scope are different questions.

For U.S. imports, the absence of a resin binder is relevant to the written scope of the quartz surface product orders, but it is not a Funtek-specific Commerce scope ruling. Sintered stone should not be classified by name alone. A defensible resin-free claim identifies the exact product, separates the fired slab body from every added layer, states whether organics are used during production, and gives percentages with a clear denominator.
