The short answer
Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic tile. In everyday retail language, “ceramic tile” usually means nonporcelain ceramic tile. The measurable US difference is water absorption: porcelain tile absorbs 0.5% or less when tested under ASTM C373.
That classification is useful, but it is not a complete project specification. Water absorption does not tell you whether a tile is slip resistant, approved for a floor, suitable outdoors, or compatible with a particular installation system.

What the labels actually mean
Ceramic is the broad family
Ceramic tile is made from mineral and clay-based materials that are formed and fired. Porcelain belongs to this family. That is why the technically precise comparison is porcelain versus nonporcelain ceramic tile.
Retailers use the shorter “ceramic versus porcelain” wording because it is familiar to shoppers. This guide follows that convention after making the classification clear.
Porcelain has a measurable absorption limit
The Tile Council of North America explains that standards define porcelain as impervious ceramic tile with water absorption of 0.5% or less under ASTM C373. The ASTM method measures water absorption under controlled conditions.
This gives buyers a testable boundary instead of relying on color, weight or marketing language. A pale, dense-looking tile is not automatically porcelain, and a darker tile body is not automatically nonporcelain ceramic.
The label does not describe every performance property
Two porcelain products can have different finishes, thicknesses, breaking strengths, abrasion behavior, dimensional tolerances and installation requirements. The same is true within nonporcelain ceramic tile.
Treat “porcelain” as one verified property. Also check:
- whether the product is approved for walls, floors or both;
- the manufacturer’s wet-area and exterior-use guidance;
- the applicable slip-resistance test for a floor;
- wear or abrasion information for the intended traffic;
- freeze-thaw or frost information where relevant;
- tile size, thickness, edge type and dimensional tolerance; and
- substrate, adhesive, grout, movement-joint and curing instructions.
The differences that affect a project
Water absorption and wet locations
Porcelain’s lower water absorption is useful in areas exposed to moisture. It can reduce the amount of water taken into the tile body, which is one reason porcelain is common in bathroom, entry and exterior product ranges.
It does not make a shower waterproof. A shower depends on the substrate, waterproofing membrane or board, transitions, penetrations, drain connection, movement joints and sealants working as a compatible assembly. The tile is the finish layer.
Nonporcelain ceramic tile is not automatically excluded from wet-area walls. A manufacturer may approve a glazed ceramic wall tile for a shower wall. Confirm the exact use and construct the waterproof assembly behind it correctly.
Density, strength and traffic
Porcelain is generally denser and can be a good fit for demanding floors. But density and absorption alone do not prove that a tile is suitable for every traffic level. A floor specification should use the manufacturer’s intended-use rating and relevant strength and wear data.
For a low-contact interior wall, porcelain’s extra performance may offer little practical benefit. For a busy entrance, restaurant floor or commercial corridor, look beyond the material label to the tested product and installation design.
Surface finish and slip resistance
A tile can be low absorption and still have a surface that is too smooth for a particular wet floor. Slip behavior comes from the finish, texture, contaminants, cleaning conditions and test method—not from the word “porcelain.”
For bathroom, shower and commercial floors, request the reported slip-resistance result used in the project’s market. Confirm that the method, result and use category meet the local specification. Do not use a wall-only polished product on a floor simply because its body is porcelain.
Glazed, unglazed and through-body products
Both porcelain and nonporcelain ceramic tiles can be glazed. A glaze provides the visible color, pattern and surface characteristics, while the body below may be different in color.
Some porcelain products are described as unglazed, full-body, through-body or color-body. These terms are not interchangeable across every manufacturer. If edge appearance or chip visibility matters, inspect a physical sample and ask how the color or pattern continues through the tile.
Size, weight and handling
Tile format changes the job. Larger pieces reduce the number of joints, but they increase demands on substrate flatness, handling, layout, coverage and lippage control. A small ceramic wall tile and a large porcelain floor tile should not be priced or installed as if the material label were the only difference.
Which tile should you choose by application?
Kitchen backsplash or dry wall
Nonporcelain ceramic tile is often practical. It is available in many decorative formats and can be easier to cut around outlets, corners and cabinets. Verify wall use and care guidance.
Bathroom or shower wall
Both can work when the exact product is approved. Porcelain offers low absorption; glazed ceramic wall tile can be easier to handle. The waterproof assembly matters more than the marketing label.
Bathroom or shower floor
Start with floor approval and wet-area slip performance. Porcelain is common, but finish, tile size, slope and drain layout must work together.
Kitchen, entry or busy floor
Porcelain is often a strong starting point where shoes, grit, spills and frequent cleaning are expected. Then verify wear, strength, finish and intended traffic.
Exterior or freeze-thaw area
Low absorption can help, but “porcelain” is not the same as exterior approval. Check climate, drainage, slope, movement joints, slip data and written manufacturer guidance.
Countertop or work surface
Conventional tile can work as a designed system. Large-format porcelain slabs and sintered stone are separate project categories with different handling and fabrication requirements.

How to verify the exact tile before you buy
Do not try to identify porcelain from appearance alone. Ask the supplier for a product sheet, declaration, carton information or certification that connects the test result to the exact series and size.
- Confirm the product identity. Match the series, color, size, finish, caliber and production information across the sample, carton and document.
- Find the water-absorption classification. For US porcelain claims, look for the ASTM C373 result or recognized certification tied to the product.
- Confirm wall or floor use. A wall-only tile is not made suitable for a floor by a low absorption value.
- Review floor-safety data. Check the applicable slip test, test conditions and intended-use category.
- Check traffic and wear guidance. Use the product’s reported information instead of assuming all porcelain performs the same.
- Verify wet, exterior and freeze-thaw use separately. Ask for written approval for the actual location and climate.
- Read the installation requirements. Confirm substrate, flatness, adhesive, coverage, joints, sealant and curing with the installer.
Installation and total cost
Cutting and drilling
Porcelain’s dense body often requires suitable diamond tooling and more time for cuts and penetrations. Nonporcelain ceramic wall tile can be easier to cut, although hard glazes, textured faces and unusual shapes can also require specialized tools.
The installer should test a spare piece before production cutting. Edge protection and hole placement are especially important around outlets, valves and fixtures.
Substrate and coverage
The tile type does not correct an unsuitable substrate. Larger formats require careful flatness checks, layout planning and adhesive coverage. Wet areas, heated floors, exteriors and movement-prone assemblies need system-specific detailing.
Do not choose adhesive by tile label alone. Use products approved for the tile body, size, substrate, exposure and installation method.
Installed cost, not shelf price
Ceramic tile may have a lower material price, but layout, trim pieces, surface preparation and labor can change the total. Porcelain may cost more to cut and handle, while a detailed ceramic pattern can be labor intensive.
Compare complete quotes that use the same scope: tile and overage; surface preparation and waterproofing; adhesive, grout, sealant and movement joints; cutting, drilling and trim; labor, access and protection; and replacement stock.

Sintered stone should not replace the answer to a ceramic-versus-porcelain question. It becomes relevant when the project brief moves from conventional tile selection to a fabricated, large-format surface.
Consider it when you need:
- broad wall or floor areas with fewer joints;
- panel sizes beyond the preferred tile layout;
- coordinated wall, floor and furniture faces;
- a stone-look, cement-look or solid surface over a large visual field; or
- project-specific fabrication and edge planning.
The trade-off is a different workflow. Large slabs and panels need approved handling, cutting, transport, substrate, adhesive, joint and installation plans. Fewer joints does not mean no joints, and a large panel does not replace waterproofing or movement accommodation.

Large-format alternative example
