Use a drill bit explicitly rated for your tile, keep hammer action off, and control the start with a suitable guide or the bit maker's starting method. Follow that exact bit's speed and cooling instructions: some diamond bits require water, while dry diamond and specialist carbide bits work differently. Stop as the tile is penetrated, then complete the hole and fixing for the actual wall behind it.
The procedure below covers ceramic and porcelain tiles. Before making a hole in an installed sintered-stone countertop, use the slab-specific drilling guidance to check the opening, support and fabrication route.
1. Match the bit to the tile and hole
Read the tile packaging, installation record or supplier description. A marble pattern does not establish that the surface is stone, and a glazed face alone does not tell you whether its body is ceramic or porcelain. For porcelain, choose a diamond tile bit or a carbide bit specifically approved for hard porcelain. A general masonry or multi-material bit is not automatically equivalent to a specialist hard-ceramic bit. For softer ceramic, a tile-rated carbide bit may be suitable; its packaging must include the material you have.
Check the required hole diameter against the mounting hardware and fixing instructions. Small holes for brackets and larger holes around pipes need different tooling. A diamond core bit cuts an annular groove and leaves a core; a solid-tipped bit cuts differently. The guide, drill connection and operating method must match that design.
Read the operating instructions as a set
These manufacturer examples show why “use a slow drill and add water” is too broad. Choose by the named model and its instructions; the cutting-tip shape alone cannot establish its operating limits.
For example, RUBI lists a maximum of 1,000 rpm for the 6 mm EASYGRES, but 500 rpm for the 35 mm EASYGRES. Both need water. The larger diameter changes the published limit within the same family. These values come from the EASYGRES product table, references 04922 and 05963.
The DRYGRES 4DRILL instructions describe a different system: dry drilling, wax and air cooling, with a recommended 1,000–2,500 rpm range and the specified movement. Those instructions do not apply to every similarly named RUBI bit or to grinder-mounted models.
Meanwhile, Bosch specifies below 500 rpm and no additional cooling for EXPERT HEX-9 HardCeramic. That specialist carbide example is why “porcelain always needs diamond” is also incomplete. Check the current instructions supplied with your bit before setting up.
2. Confirm the location, fixing and support
Place the actual bracket or its template against the wall and check that the fitting clears adjacent taps, doors and shelves. Decide how the load will reach suitable backing before drilling. A hollow wall, masonry wall and timber-backed mounting point need different fixings. Establish the backing from reliable installation information or an appropriate inspection; the tile face does not establish the wall's load capacity.
For grab bars, heavy shelves and other load-critical fittings, use the specified backing and installation detail. If these are unknown, have the installer establish them before making holes. Do not move a fixing close to a tile edge simply to hide it behind the bracket. Edge distance and clearance must satisfy the tile, fixing and assembly requirements; a universal distance cannot approve an unknown installation.
Check for hidden pipes and cables using installation records and a suitable detector operated exactly as instructed. Some live-wire modes require an energized circuit during detection. Follow the detector instructions during the survey, then have the relevant circuits safely isolated and verified before drilling where electrical services may be affected. A detector's clear indication alone cannot establish that a wall is safe: Bosch describes conditions that can prevent reliable detection. Stop if the service route remains uncertain.

For a loose tile, place it flat on clean, stable sacrificial backing and secure it without bending it. Support the area around the intended hole and leave clearance for the bit to exit into the backing. A tile balanced between supports can move or flex as drilling pressure changes.

Prepare eye protection and a dust-control arrangement appropriate to the bit, material and work. Dry drilling can need on-tool extraction; wet drilling needs controlled water and slurry collection compatible with the equipment. Follow the applicable respiratory-protection requirements as well. Keep other people clear, protect nearby surfaces and keep water away from the drill motor and electrical connections.
3. Mark the centers and establish a controlled start
Use the actual hardware template, a pencil and a level to transfer the hole centers. Check the spacing against the bracket once more. Masking tape can make a mark easier to see, but it does not provide rigid support for a wandering bit.

A guide is particularly useful for a diamond core bit without a pilot. Secure the guide as its manufacturer requires and check that the opening is centered over the mark. The EASYGRES system calls for its appropriate guide when drilling its small-diameter holes with water.

Use the starting method for your bit. A straight-tipped tile bit and a hollow diamond core do not necessarily start in the same way. Some diamond bits permit an angled start followed by controlled alignment; a guided system uses its guide. Avoid applying one technique to every tool, and do not hammer a center punch into the glaze to make a starting dent.
On a spare tile from the same batch, rehearse the guide, speed control and collection arrangement first when one is available. This can reveal slipping or an unsuitable setup before work on the finished wall. It does not clear hidden services or confirm the wall's support.
4. Drill with the correct cooling and feed
Set the drill to rotary action with hammer mode off. Confirm that the chuck holds the bit securely and that the drill can operate in its prescribed range. A gear number alone is not a speed specification: use the drill's stated range and trigger control together.
With a wet diamond system, establish the prescribed water supply before cutting and maintain it at the cutting edge. Collect the slurry so it does not enter nearby sockets, finished joints or fittings. If the water supply stops, stop the cut and restore it. Do not continue dry with a wet-only bit.

With a dry diamond system, follow its prescribed motion and cooling pauses. Keep any extraction arrangement compatible with that movement. A wax-filled bit may still need space and movement for cooling; holding it rigidly in one position and forcing it can defeat the intended operating method.
For diamond drilling, use controlled light feed and let the abrasive rim work. For a carbide bit, follow that model's feed instructions; do not transfer a diamond bit's technique automatically. Keep your body balanced so that a sudden breakthrough does not drive the tool deeper into the wall.
Watch the cut rather than a timer. A developing groove and steady material removal show progress. If the bit skates, binds, stops advancing or overheats, release the trigger and inspect the setup. Extra force is not a useful substitute for checking the bit's material rating, condition, cooling and any trapped core.
For a larger pipe opening, use a tile-rated core bit of the required diameter with its compatible guide and support. Let the core cutter complete the circular opening. Do not substitute a ring of small holes followed by hammering out the center, which can damage the tile beyond the intended opening.
5. Stop at breakthrough, then finish the fixing
As the tile is nearly penetrated, control the feed carefully. Stop when you reach the backing instead of continuing at the same pressure into an unknown material. The next operation depends on the wall construction and the chosen fixing.

If the approved fixing needs a masonry bore, change to the appropriate masonry bit and follow the fixing's specified diameter, depth and cleaning procedure. A hollow-wall fixing or timber fixing follows its own instructions. Keep the new bit clear of the tile edge. Use impact in masonry only if the fixing, tool and wall-assembly instructions permit it after the tile has been fully cleared; otherwise continue with the approved rotary method.
Keep tile penetration and anchor depth separate. For a hypothetical fixing that requires a 40 mm bore into masonry behind a measured 12 mm non-structural finish build-up, the bore reaches 12 + 40 = 52 mm from the finished face. Those are example inputs, not recommended depths. Use the actual fixing requirement and measured layers, and establish service clearance before drilling that far. Screw length is another check because the bracket and fixing geometry also consume length.
Clean the hole with the method specified for the fixing and control the dust or slurry. Follow any drying requirement before applying sealant or installing the anchor. The fixing should transfer its load into the intended support without using the brittle tile edge as an expansion point or forcing a misaligned bracket into place.
Restore the waterproofing detail
In a shower or wet area, a neat hole through the tile is only part of the job. Determine how the penetration through the waterproof layer must be sealed. A bead around the visible bracket does not establish that the concealed penetration is treated correctly.
For example, the Schluter Shower System Handbook requires penetrations in its waterproofing to receive the appropriate system treatment, such as its specified seals or compatible sealant detail. Use the actual shower system's instructions for the opening, fastener and fitting, including preparation and cure time. If the membrane system cannot be identified, get the installer or system supplier to confirm the detail before proceeding.

Tighten the fitting to its instructions rather than continuing until the tile is compressed. Check that the bracket sits correctly and the tile has no new crack. Observe the required cure period before exposing the assembly to water or applying its intended load.
6. Inspect a stalled, chipped or misplaced hole
A shiny mark with little progress: stop and verify the bit's exact material rating. A general-purpose bit that looks similar to a hard-ceramic bit may perform differently. Check for wear, glazing or a trapped core using the maker's maintenance instructions. Disconnect the power or remove the battery before clearing or changing the bit, and allow hot tooling to cool.
A chipped rim: inspect how far the damage extends. A small surface chip and a crack running away from the hole are different defects. A mounting cover can conceal the appearance, but it cannot establish that the tile, waterproofing or fixing is sound.

A misplaced hole or moving tile: stop the installation and agree a repair with the installer. Do not enlarge the opening sideways by levering the bit or tighten the bracket to pull an unsupported tile into position. Replacement and waterproofing repair may be needed before a new mounting position can be used.
