Brand Identity: Two Named Surface Systems, Not Generic Grades

Lapitec describes its product as full-body sintered stone made in Italy from minerals, with no surface print. Its 2024 technical sheet defines the current “silica free” wording precisely: slabs made with Biorite contain no more than 1% crystalline silica. That statement belongs to Lapitec's documented formula; it should not be transferred to another brand.

Dekton is Cosentino's ultra-compact surface brand. Cosentino's manufacturing documents describe an inorganic mineral formula and decoration systems that can create effects through the thickness or only on the surface. That distinction matters: the word “Dekton” alone does not tell an architect how a specific colour will look at a polished edge, mitre, groove or cutout.

Material and Body: What Changes at the Edge?

Lapitec's clearest differentiator is not a generic claim of being “stronger.” It is the full-body relationship between face and body. Lapitec says its mechanical finishes and decoration are not printed onto a separate surface layer, and its kitchen guidance specifically connects that body to straight, ribbed, bullnose and other worked edge details.

With Dekton, the right question is colour-specific: does this exact design carry its effect through the thickness, and what will the exposed edge look like after the approved finishing sequence? Some projects conceal the body with a mitred build-up; others intentionally show a slim edge. A physical edge sample resolves more than a top-face chip.

This is an aesthetic and fabrication distinction, not permission to ignore structural details. Full-body colour does not eliminate the need for correct cutout radii, support, handling or edge protection, while a surface-led design is not automatically unsuitable when the chosen edge detail is approved.

Lapitec publishes an XXL 3440 × 1540 mm slab and 12, 20 and 30 mm calibrated thicknesses. Its main finish page currently lists Lux, Satin, Lithos, Vesuvio, Arena and Velluto, all produced mechanically. Finish availability still changes by colour and application, so the combination—not the finish name alone—belongs on the quote.

Dekton uses more than one slab route. Current Cosentino application pages describe a 3200 × 1440 mm standard slab and, where offered, a 3300 × 1630 mm Jumbo slab. The wider portfolio includes 4, 8, 12, 20 and 30 mm, but the selected colour and application may expose only a subset. A current countertop page, for example, may list 8, 12 and 20 mm while facade or furniture documentation includes thinner options.

The geometry changes the winner. Lapitec's 3440 mm length can help one cutting layout; Dekton Jumbo's 1630 mm width can help another. Compare the largest required finished blank against the usable slab area after edge trim, defect allowance, vein direction, seams and cutouts—not just the catalogue headline.

Countertops: Fabricator, Cutouts and Edges Decide the Result

Both brands publish countertop guidance and both can serve kitchens, islands, backsplashes and outdoor worktops. The project risk is concentrated before installation: moving a large brittle blank, cutting sink and hob openings, finishing inside corners, joining mitres, supporting overhangs and sequencing site access.

Lapitec can be the clearer aesthetic route when a sculpted or visibly worked edge must remain consistent with the body. Dekton can be the more practical route when the approved colour, thickness and experienced local fabricator are already in the Cosentino channel. The opposite choice can still win when local stock, slab yield or a particular design changes.

  • Ask for a recent edge and cutout sample in the selected colour and thickness.
  • Put sink support, hob clearances, inside-corner geometry, seams, overhang support and mitre ownership on the drawing.
  • Confirm who carries risk during templating, transport, fabrication, installation and replacement.

Lapitec and Dekton both publish outdoor and facade applications, but a UV-resistance icon is not a facade specification. Panel size, thickness, wind load, anchor type and spacing, backing or mesh, subframe, joints, openings, impact zone, fire classification and local code approval determine the installed system.

Lapitec's ventilated-facade manual links allowable combinations to panel size, thickness and anchoring layout; its published systems include different mechanical and bonded routes. Cosentino also publishes Dekton facade technical data, fixing systems and family-specific fire/performance scopes. Dekton's thinner panel routes may reduce dead load in an appropriate system; Lapitec's 12 mm full-body route may support another architectural and edge strategy. Neither fact approves a facade by itself.

There is no defensible global rule that Lapitec is always more expensive than Dekton, or the reverse. Colour tier, finish, thickness, slab yield, local stock, distributor structure, fabricator experience, edge work, cutouts, installation, access, freight, tax and warranty route can change the installed total.

Dekton's worldwide centre and certified-studio route can improve access in many markets, but it does not guarantee that the selected colour, finish or Jumbo slab is locally stocked. Lapitec availability also needs an exact distributor, slab and trained-fabricator check. Compare two written quotes with the same finished drawings and inclusions.
