No—not as a blanket material category. Safe Work Australia states that sintered stone is excluded from the engineered-stone definition provided it does not contain resin. That does not make every product sold under the name automatically acceptable: buyers and importers still need evidence for the exact slab, and separate silica controls can apply when it is cut, drilled, ground or polished.
What Australia’s Engineered-Stone Ban Actually Covers
Australia’s domestic prohibition on the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered-stone benchtops, panels and slabs took effect on 1 July 2024. Under the model definition, an engineered-stone product contains at least 1% crystalline silica by weight, is created by combining natural stone materials with other chemical constituents, and becomes hardened. The official exclusions include sintered stone and porcelain products when they do not contain resin.

Legal to Supply Does Not Mean Dust-Free to Fabricate
A resin-free sintered stone may sit outside the engineered-stone prohibition and still contain crystalline silica. Safe Work Australia’s 2025 review describes sintered stone as an alternative material that typically has no resin, while noting that permitted alternatives can still contain significant crystalline silica. The regulatory questions are therefore different: the ban addresses a defined product category, while workplace rules address exposure created during processing.
From 1 September 2024, stronger model regulations apply to work with crystalline silica substances containing at least 1% crystalline silica. Safe Work Australia’s crystalline silica substance resource says a business using power tools or machinery must assess whether processing is high risk, use a combination of controls, and meet additional requirements such as a silica risk control plan and worker training when the assessment finds high risk.
Do not choose controls from a blog alone. The fabricator should work to the current law and regulator guidance in the relevant jurisdiction. Is Sintered Stone a Good Benchtop Choice in Australia?
It can be a strong choice when the exact product, design details and fabrication team are matched. Start with the broader sintered stone countertop system, then request the manufacturer’s current technical data for the selected finish, thickness and application. Low water absorption, stain resistance, heat tolerance and UV stability are common selection reasons, but they are not universal promises—especially for outdoor kitchens or surfaces beside heat-producing appliances.
Where it can add value
- Indoor kitchen and vanity surfaces: a dense, easy-care surface can suit busy residential and commercial interiors when its use rating is confirmed.
- Outdoor kitchens: some products have documented UV and weather performance, but exterior approval, colour heat gain, substrate and movement details remain product- and system-specific.
- Large visual fields: large slab formats can reduce joints and carry stone, concrete or solid-colour looks across an island and splashback.
- Post-ban material schedules: resin-free sintered stone can provide an alternative route, provided classification evidence and silica-processing duties are handled separately.
Where project teams get caught

A hard surface is not indestructible. Thin sections, exposed corners, sink rails, cooktop cut-outs, unsupported overhangs and mitred build-ups concentrate risk. Seven Checks Before You Buy Sintered Stone for an Australian Project
- Lock the product identity. Record the manufacturer, collection, colour, finish, thickness, slab format, product code and batch reference. “Sintered stone” is too broad for approval.
- Request regulatory evidence. Obtain the current SDS or equivalent product information, a clear resin statement, relevant composition evidence and any importer or broker documents required for the transaction.
- Confirm the application rating. Check whether the exact product is approved for benchtops, food-contact areas where applicable, exterior exposure, walls, floors or furniture. Do not transfer one use rating to another.
- Review a physical sample and the full slab. Small samples help with finish and colour, while a full-slab image or inspection reveals repeat, vein position, bookmatch potential and defects that affect cutting layouts.
- Freeze fabrication details. Agree on seams, edge profiles, cut-outs, corner radii, overhangs, support, sink treatment and pattern direction before the slab is processed.
- Qualify the fabricator. Confirm experience with the selected product and thickness, workshop controls, cutting and handling equipment, templating, transport, installation responsibility and warranty boundaries.
- Compare complete quote scope. Separate slab supply from templating, fabrication, edge build-ups, cut-outs, delivery, lifting, installation, tax, local compliance work and remedial exclusions. A per-square-metre figure without inclusions is not a reliable comparison.

Importing Sintered Stone Slabs into Australia
The import checkpoint became more important when engineered-stone benchtops, panels and slabs became prohibited imports on 1 January 2025. The Australian Border Force engineered-stone guidance says importers must provide documents confirming that goods are not engineered stone. It gives a compliant Material Safety Data Sheet as one example and warns that declarations or “crystalline silica free” labels alone may not be sufficient. If the status is unknown, testing may be required before import or at the importer’s cost.
