- Decide whether the surface should blend into the room or become its focal point.
- Match the slab's warm, cool or neutral undertone to the fixed materials.
- Check the pattern at full-slab scale rather than judging only a small sample.
- Review the finish in the actual project light.

Color, Pattern and Finish Are Three Different Decisions
Color describes the main visual family: white, cream, beige, grey, black, brown, green, blue or another tone. There is no universal color catalogue shared by every manufacturer. Product names also vary, so the useful starting point is a set of practical color families rather than a list of marketing names.
White and Off-White
White surfaces can range from crisp cool white to cream, ivory and cloud white. They are useful when a project needs a bright, restrained background or when cabinetry, furniture and artwork should carry more of the visual weight.

Beige, sand, mushroom, taupe and greige can connect timber, warm metals and stone-look interiors without the sharp contrast of a bright white surface. Their undertones matter: one beige may be yellow and creamy, another pink or peach, and another grey enough to sit closer to greige.

Grey and Concrete Tones
Grey can be cool and blue-based, warm and taupe-based, or almost neutral. Concrete-look greys often introduce cloudy movement or fine texture, while stone-look greys may carry veins, fossils or mineral variation.
Grey is not automatically the safe neutral. A cool grey surface can conflict with warm oak, cream paint or brass, while a warmer grey may coordinate with them. Compare all materials together rather than selecting grey from a screen.
Black and Other Dark Colors
Black, charcoal and deep brown can anchor a large room, frame light cabinetry or create a strong reception counter, island or feature wall. Green, blue, burgundy and other statement colors can turn a slab into the visual center of a lobby, island, bar, bathroom or furniture piece. They need more than a small swatch because the amount of color, vein direction and pattern repeat determines whether the result feels controlled or overwhelming.
For a statement slab, decide which surrounding materials will become quieter. It is usually easier to let one surface lead than to make the slab, cabinetry, floor and wall compete equally.
Start With Undertone, Not the Product Name
Product names are not a reliable color standard. “Ivory,” “sand,” “cloud,” “silver” or “stone grey” may describe very different undertones across suppliers. Begin with what the slab does beside the fixed project materials.
Place the candidate sample next to the cabinet door, flooring, backsplash, paint, wood veneer and metal finish. Review the group vertically as well as horizontally because light reaches a wall, worktop and floor differently. If the project uses large windows, check the palette at more than one time of day.
Use three questions:
- Does the slab repeat an undertone already present in the room?

Check how the color behaves under both general lighting and mirror lighting, whether adjacent tiles are warm or cool, and how panel joints affect the pattern. Online images are useful for discovery, but screen settings, photography, compression and ambient light can change the visible color. A small sample confirms surface and undertone more reliably, yet it may not show full pattern scale, repeat, vein direction or variation across a slab.
